Is this any good?

Hi I have recorded myself, I was nervous about it (first time that I recorded myself) so I messed up time a bit, and it is hard w/o metronome or drummer to keep good time. But I'm interested mainly how do I sound is it any good, and how is my articulation. Thank you.

Re: Is this any good?

In this tune, rhythm is very important. Listen to a recording of the tune. See how they put an accent on every 3rd note? (the E) Also, the first three notes are a pickup in to bar 1, so you have to make sure to accent the first beat of the 1st bar.

This tune is a swing tune, so swing your 8th notes. This will give it more excitement.

When the notes in the phrase go higher, use more air to give them the same fullness of sound as the lower notes.

I quickly recorded me playing the melody to the tune. I am in no way a master, but I think it should help with phrasing and feel.

Re: Is this any good?

Take everything I say with a large helping of salt.

Your articulation feels like sometimes it could use a little bit more "pop" to certain notes - if you listen to Miles Davis's take on this tune, you can hear how he tends to pop the last note of each group of three ever so slightly. Stronger articulation helps with this.

It also sounds like you're not fully internalizing the beat. Count off the tune out loud before you start to play it. If you need, get your foot going in time. I actually prefer to bob up and down if the tempo permits - it helps you really feel the time inside your body. Time is one of the most important things in jazz. Also, really swing the eighth notes - think of each group of two eighths as three eighth-note triplets with the first two tied together. This should help you get the feel.

Also, I'd say take this tune faster. Maybe quarter note = 168 or somewhere up there.

If you are using Mozilla browser it may be blocking some items. You will need to change your setting to be able to download Breke's clip.
