![]() | Anyone ever had a hernia? I have and IVP scheduled on Tuesday and among other things this is something they are looking for. I can rest for a few days, but if I play my horn for even a short period of time I hurt like someone is stabbing me. So, if you have had a hernia, how long after treatment were you back to normal? How long did you have to stay off the horn? I’ve heard rumors that I’ll be told not to play for 4-6 months, and that my days of playing hard might be over for good. Please tell me some good news on your hernia treatment.

![]() ![]() | Dave, I had a right inguinal hernia repaired a few years ago. It was performed in the usual way, cut across the abdomen and 6-8 sutures to close it. I was back to playing within a week and back to gigging within two weeks. If a doctor sats you might not play again, FIND A NEW DOCTOR! -cw-

![]() ![]() | Twice. . . once to repair an umbilical hernia when I was in the Rotterdam Phil. and once to fix the lousy job that the Dutch Doc did. Stay off the horn for two weeks to make sure the repair isn't compromised and then get on with your playing life. There's no reason whatsoever for this to be career threatening. Phil's had it and many others have too. Cheers, EC |

![]() | Yes, when i was in 7th grade. Yours may have been more severe, but i was off the horn for such a short time that i dont even remember how long I was off the horn. I was in 7th grade, had surgery at the start of a 1 week break, and im 98% certain i played in band when we came back from the break, so 1-2 weeks sounds about right. |

| Mezzo Piano User | A friend of mine in the marching band had one last year. It ended the season for him marching, but after about a week or so he was back on the sideline playing his sax. So I don't think it'll be to awful unless you plan to do alot of marching the next few months.

![]() | I had hernia surgery back in May of this year. I wish that I could tell you what to expect, however my experience was not typical. The best that I can do is offer you some advice. See my post here http://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/v...ghlight=hernia & BE CAREFUL!!! I couldn't play a note for three months because my jaw was wired shut!! I'm still working back to my previous level. I am now going through the dental work for the busted teeth. As it turns out, I had 10 teeth that were also damaged in the accident. ![]() | I had a double hernia repaired a few years ago. It was fixed (I shouldn't use that word, should I) through two very small incisions. They spread a cloth across my lower abdomin. They said it's impossible to blow out another hernia through that cloth. As a trumpet player, I took that as a challenge. I was off the horn for a couple of weeks and no heavy lifting for a month.

![]() | They found mine using the "turn your head and cough" method.
