Arban

Hey everyone

I just kinda had a thought when it comes to the Arban book and how he describes the double and or triple tounging.

He was french, correct? So when he writes Tu Ku when describing tounging would he actually mean the pronounciation "Tsu Ku"?

If this is the case, this also could help with explaining the way the air and tounge relate.

Just a thought, feel free to disagree

I've read in a foot note that "tu ku" French-like is not "tu ku" but rather "tew kew" which is closer to "tee kee" (ie like a flautist would tongue).

The letters u and û are pronounced [y]- roughly similar to the vowel sound of pew but shorter and without the diphthong.

Sound samples here. Not TU, but NU, SU and BU (but the U has the same sound as it would in TU and KU)

Since it is clear that the approaches vary the sound, the decision needs to be made by the player: does your job demand the sound produced by "tooh" or the Arban "tu"? It's a question of which sound you want to use. Or do you need both for a variety of literature? That's what the player has to consider.

Then, do you control the tongue or do you ask for the sound to deal with the physical process?

Just some things to consider.
