Ok, this is a very elementary question, but.....
In the first couple of pages of the Arban, basically where the quarter notes start (I don't have my book with me to be exact) there are little triangles underneath each note. What does this mean? Is it an attack on each note?
That is what the French refered to as the "martele" (MAR-te-lay) attack. Literally it means "hammered". So, it's a very clear, pointed attack. It doesn't have to do with note length but just the style of starting the note.
