Can you reach the notes?

Hi Guys

This is a question that has been on my mind a bit so I thought I'd ask the cool guys at Trumpet Master.

Can you play ''Feels so good'' by Chuck Mangione? And if so can you reach all the notes easily?

I have been playing for 15 years + and admit that I have a terrible time with playing this tune because the notes are so high. I can play it but the high notes come out messy.

I use a Holton Heim #2 (10c) and still have difficulty

Besides practising the very high end of the register with sustained high notes, any ideas, techniques or mouthpieces that will help in my quest to master this register?

I've been playing this mouthpiece for 9 months and can play high notes very well on the Heim. I get about 5 hours of endurance on this mouthpiece, but have seen no real improvement in the extreme high regester!

Thanks

I don't have much advice for extreme high register playing...I've always just been able to do it. I don't know how I do it, I just see the notes on the page and play them.

The one thing that has helped is the horn I currently use (1600 WB). The slotting in the extreme register is much tighter or easier (I'm not sure which term is correct) than the 75 Benge I used to play.

By the way, what arrangement of Feels So Good are you trying to play? The one I learned (years ago) doesn't go very high.

Hi

If you can play the extreme high regester with little effort then you are one of the fortunate few like Maynard. Extreme high regester has always been a bit of a problem for me.

You could be right, my horn doesnt slot to well in the very high registers, but then again Martin Committee isnt known for that.

I am trying to play the album verson of feels so good. I can play it but the highest notes come out messy.

So you can get the notes out? If you can get them out but they sound messy this could be one of many things:
too little air
closed or receded jaw
closed throat
poor breath support
air leak in embouchure or horn
too much mpc pressure

If I were you I would go through and check each one of these things before you try any methods or tips. Most likely it's a problem that's easily fixed.
Hope this helps.
Chris

Quick question.
What is the highest note you are trying to hit?

I don't remember that piece being all that high. I think it goes to a high D, and maybe a few high Cs. Are those the notes you're talking about?

Warren brings up a good point -- what note are you trying to hit? I'm not high-note specialist, but I never had trouble with that piece, though if you're using the flugel it can take a bit more effort.

Of course, coming from Warren, it may not mean much. He's one of those guys who gets bored when a lead chart only goes to E above high C...

Are you playing this model Martin Committee? It's a strange and rare bird. Miles played this model.

C'mon Rick

The album version is in Concert F.
The highest note is only a D for trumpet, and there's only one of them.

Hey Guys

Thanks for all the responses and I read them all with great interest.

Ok, well the highest note that I can reach with my Heim 10c is ''A'' on top of high ''C.'' I am shooting for double C on top of the staff which is only 2 notes higher but am having a hard time getting it.

I can reach the notes on 'Feels so good' but like I said they come out Messy. So I am thinking that it is one of the 6 things that Chris mentioned, so I am eagerly gonna center my practise on these aspects tonight. Thanks Chris! I'll let you know if these work.

Wilmer...thanks for your response and interest in my prob. Cool www pic of that Committee Flugel, but alas...I am playing one of the modern Committees. I play the Red Laquered T3467RE with delux engraving. SHe's a beauty and I love playing her! I call her 'Precious Lila' and named her after my wife. May sound a little corny but I wouldnt be where I am in music if it were'nt for Miles Davis and my beautiful wife

Thanks guys
