From Bunnings, White Knight Rust Guard 300g Clear Guard Topcoat for Alumimium, Brass and Copper. I have used on brass objects successfully, but not on a trumpet, with care could be reasonably good for a D-I-Y.

Lacquer Thinners can contain a mix of Amyl or Butyl Acetate, Acetone, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Toluene and Alcohols.

    Regards, Stuart.

    Re: Clear gloss sprayaont

Brass lacquer, at least back in the days before the epoxy finishes, was nitrocellulose lacquer. I don't know what's available to you there in New Zealand, but any gloss clear lacquer finish is going to be what you want if you are going for actual lacquer. Some finishes like Deft, that don't openly advertise as being nitrocellulose lacquer, are actually nitro lacquers.

Otherwise, I'd think that any clear finish, for your project, would probably be ok.
