I downloaded musescore and it is free and did (almost) everything that I needed it to do and the key component of any software is that it should be somewhat intuitive and not require a ton of reading to figure out. I can actually see the notes from a distance now which is what I wanted to accomplish and the Musescore is sort of cool in that you can listen to the notes with an instrument and see how it is supposed to sound. someone I know said that they have Finale and highly recommend it, but I can't see investing that much money into it for no more than I might use it for. My friend, however also has composed a couple of pieces here and there for an entire orchestra. I don't think they were all that great, but better than anything I have written.
