I used to play with my lower jaw receded and then pulled it back as I went higher. This caused my top lip to protrude into the cup ,so I could only play very deep cups,Bach cups without a letter , my bell used to point at the floor, almost like a clarinet,my range was only E above the staff,I always used a lower lip curl ,so the only change I made was to bring my jaw forward which flattened my playing surface , I still tilt down a bit, the bell isn't straight out . This also made it possible for me to use not only C cups but also D and E's ,even Schilke A cups. I made this change in 1975 and never had any problems with it.
