Earplugs?

Does anyone here use earplugs when you play?
I have been doing a lot of playing in larger bands recently and I am really noticing how loud the bands are. It is especially evident when I have to sit beside the drummer in a big band, or play within 25 feet of a drummer in a funk band.

What kind of earplugs do you guys use? Did you see a doctor to get them or did you order them off the net or at a construction store?

Re: Earplugs?

I play with cotton in my ears frequently. I don't like earplugs, try singing with your fingers in your ears and you'll get an idea of what it like to play with them.

Re: Earplugs?

If you're ever in NYC, contact Radio Partner/Scientific Hearing Center at 212-967-7628. They're located at 243 W. 30th St near Penn Station. They make wonderful plugs form fitted to your ears with interchangeable filters that enable you to eliminate more or less db's. I usually put 1 in-- whichever ear was towards the rhythm section on the louder gigs. It helped me tremendously. Worth the investment.

As the poster above me said. There are plugs with filters that only filter certain frequencies so you can still hear voices and your playing, but not the highs of the cymbals and the lows of the bass.

Brek,

I'm on vacation but when I get back next I could ask some of my colleagues that use them. The seem to be fairly high tech. in fact the orchestra pays for a portion of their cost, I think (I don't know for sure). I believe it involves going to an otolaryngologist and getting fitted. The people that use them are pretty happy with them.

As I say, i can find out about if you like.

Re: Earplugs?

That's what I had to do. I had my ENT specialist make molds of my ears, and had a set of custom-fitted plugs made with removable inserts for 15 and 30 db.

These cost me $150, but they are the best I've found. I've lost enough hearing already...........

I used earplugs while playing in the Army. It seems that Army bands have two volumes........loud and louder. The plugs Mikey is referring to are what most Army musicians wear. They are top notch and really help. Just make sure you don't lose the inserts.

Re: Earplugs?

Great Ideas. Thank you for the posts. I am going to look into custom ear plugs.

I can use them for shooting.

That would be a big help. I have tinnitus already. No sense in making it worse.
