Maynard used to say that you have to approach your trumpet playing like you would working out at the gym. The last thing you want to do is over work a muscle group. For the muscles to grow and get stronger, they have to have rest time. Being smart about practicing is the bottom line.

Think about doing light days mixed in with heavier days... and rest your face often. Your lips are soft tissue - so it doesn't take much to make them swell from abuse. H.L. Clarke touched on this in his book... he says by not playing too loudly and keeping the lips flexible you won't have to strain.
