First Trumpet advice

Can anyone give me some advice please on what sort of trumpet I should buy as a begginer and the kind of price range I should stay in.

I'm looking for a soft jazz sound, I was turned onto the Trumpet by Chris Botti, I love the soft forlorn sound he plays. Sorry if this is something not achieved with simply buying a trumpet (As I suspect ) but I am clueless, yet eager to learn.

Any advice you have at all is welcome :]
Thanks for reading

Re: First Trumpet advice

Hello Fourthings, and welcome to trumpetmaster. I like Botti's sound also. He used to play on a Getzen. You can find used Getzen Eterna's for $500.00-$700.00. You can find used student Yamaha's, Getzen's, Holton, Olds and many others for $150.00-$300.00. Buying a trumpet is such a personal thing that no one can tell you what to buy. You should find a teacher to help you get started. Often a teacher can help you find a good deal on a quality horn. Good Luck, Bobby

Re: First Trumpet advice

Yeah from reading the forums here I'm seeing there is allot to know about the instrument, perhaps it would be wise to start with a teacher. I'm emigrating to Melbourne from Dublin soon, so perhaps then would be an ideal time to shop around for lessons.

Thank you very much for your advice, I appreciate it :]

Re: First Trumpet advice

If it's a warm expressive sound you want, not too strident you ,might want to consider a cornet.
Instruments tend to be expensive in Australia, the range of models limited and the opportunity to test play not good. Australian dollar is the highest value its been in years so that won't help. Buy before you leave.

For new and second hand horns in Melbourne aust, Australia's Brass and Woodwind Specialists.

I can recommend Greg Spence, www.mysterytomastery.com.au for lessons, the best teacher I have had in 25 years.

There are several Melbournians belonging to the forum I am sure would help you out. I am up in melbourne one day a week for band and orchestra rehersals.

Regards, Stuart.

I'm biased toward the cornet as well. I picked up an Olds Special for my son as his first horn, and paired it to a Bach 6 (not C) for him after trying a litany of mpcs from the drawer. He's coming along nicely. The Olds is built like a tank, too. That keeps my concern level a bit lower as he just turned 12. Good Luck on your search.

Re: First Trumpet advice

Get a decent student horn and then work with a teacher to develop your sound. Sound is about 90% you and 10% equipment.

Re: First Trumpet advice

If you can't make it to one of the stores before you leave, then here is a suggestion. Once you are in Dublin, look for an Olds Ambassador cornet. If you can't find one there, buy one on ebay. You can often buy one on ebay for under $50US and even with shipping you won't be out much. And, it is almost impossible to buy a bad one so there is minimal risk (if you look closely at the photos to make sure it's not flattened). And, an Olds Ambassador will last you for many years (I still have my original 1955). And, they play great. It's a good way to start until you catch the 'bug' and start buying everything in sight.

Re: First Trumpet advice

Hello fourthings. If you know for sure, you are in this for the long haul. Go to Sam Ash Music Company site. They were selling some of the last models of the Kanstul made Besson 800 International Trumpets. This Trumpet will more than fill the Bill for you. Many consider it Pro-grade,close to a Bach Strad playing level. It is well made with very good Silver plating. Has Pro features found only on more higher priced Trumpets. It may cost a little more to go first class, but will be cheaper in the end. Good luck

Re: First Trumpet advice

Hi Fourthings and welcome to Trumpetmaster. I have a quick question for you. Since you indicate that you are a novice to the art, aren't you being a bit premature in specifying a specific sound(soft jazz) this early in the game? I would think you need some basic training before fine tuning your sound so early. Anyway, best of luck.
