TRIVENI, a Sanskrit word meaning "the place where the three sacred rivers
meet", is jazz-trumpeter Avishai Cohen's new trumpet/bass/drums trio.
Continuing the long-standing tradition of jazz trios without a harmonic/chordal instrument into the world of today, TRIVENI runs freely in the realms of hard-bop, straight-up funk, with a bit of avant-garde thrown into the mix. The trio features the bass playing of Joe Martin and Nasheet Waits on the drums. After leading a similarly-configured trio on his debut CD ‘The Trumpet Player’ (FreshSound New Talent), Avishai has since explored the sounds and structures of African music with Lionel Loueke (featured on Avishai's latest release ‘After The Big Rain’ (Anzic Records), funk (with Me'shell Ndegeocello), folk/pop (with singer Keren Ann) and modern jazz. Now Avishai presents the new sound of TRIVENI.

Re: FONT Music! preliminary schedule here!

It would be great if tradition was broken and these actually drew an audience. FONT has been a terrible disappointment in that regard, in spite of presenting some amazing music and musicians.

Re: FONT Music! preliminary schedule here!

Hi ECarroll,

I think that is a fairly inaccurate statement - the FONT events at the bigger venues such as the Jazz Standard and places like Merkin Hall or St.Marks Church have been very well attended. The festival is now entering it's 6th year - if it always had an attendance problem it wouldn't have survived this long. Granted some of the shows happening at smaller or less-known venues have pulled in a smaller crowd but that is fairly normal for these types of gigs in NYC.

COME OUT AND SUPPORT FONT MUSIC folks - it's a wonderful festival during which you will be exposed to some amazing music and some amazing players.

Cheers,
Jason

Re: FONT Music! preliminary schedule here!

Jason,

I think that FONT is a great, great, thing. There were only 6 people in the audience when I played, however (yes, it was probably me) and Mark quit this year complaining that he couldn't even get his MSM students to attend (their obvious loss). Programming in NYC is a daunting thing.

It's a wonderful lineup this year, as usual, and I'm thrilled to see Kris Tiner on the list. I'll do everything that I can to be down for a few shows.

Best,
EC

Re: FONT Music! preliminary schedule here!

yes - I agree, it is tough to get people out to shows, I think based on the competition (always tons of stuff happening in NYC) and the economy - people cutting back on nights out. When and where did you play?

Hopefully it will be well attended this year. Regarding Mark quitting after one year, that is of course his decision, but why give up so easily? The Festival is healthy in every sense of the word and moving forward with bigger and better plans for the future. FONT has become a big part of the NYC music festival season and also a coveted gig for any trumpeter on the scene.

Cheers,
Jason
