Help with Mount Vernon Bach Trumpet
I'm new to the board. Thanks for having me. I'm checking out a Mount Vernon Bach. I've never played Bach trumpets, but it plays/sounds nice. I don't know the model #. There appears to be none, only a serial #. It's 18546. ML bore.
Here's what I'd like to know: How reliable are these old horns? What should I expect to pay? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
This one is from the very late 1950's, and is most probably has a standard 37 bell. I believe at that time, no number after "Model" on the bell means it's a 37. If it plays and sounds nice, it may be in pretty good shape. The earlier Mt. Vernons had thinner bells, and are damaged easier - I'm not sure if the ones nearing 1960 were still built that way, though. Check the compression (suction on the valve slides when pulled out without depressing the valve). You should get a nice "pop" if the valves don't leak. Also check the leadpipe for small reddish specks (or bubbles if silver plated) on the outside. This would possibly indicate a condition called "red rot" and will eventually form a pinhole.
Anyway, excuse me if I've told you things you already know. If the horn's in good shape, it will be extremely reliable, and will increase in value over time. Depending on overall condition, it could range from less than $1000 if it's not so great to over $2500 if it's in very good condition. I sold a nice '55 MV on eBay a couple years ago for a little over $2000. Here's a photo for comparison.
