Herb Alpert Mythical Beast

I saw Herb Alpert last night performing with his wife, Lani Hall, along with a small combo (piano, bass, drums). All were terrific musicians.

What intrigued me was the custom horn Herb designed himself. It has 2 bells! He puts a harmon mute permanently into one bell, and when hitting a trigger, swaps between bells. That way he can swap muted sounds immediately.

From a convenience standpoint, I get it, but it seemed rather gimmicky to me. It didn't have as nice a sound as his regular horn.

What would have been cool would be if he could play through both bells at once, but it doesn't work that way. Got me wondering what kind of case it requires....

Anyone else seen this "mythical beast" of a horn?

Re: Herb Alpert Mythical Beast

Dave Monette made a "Shewhorn" for Bobby Shew that does the same thing.
