I think the grip is more indicative of your playing stile than any change in sound.
When I was in college, my teacher told me to grip the trumpet. He told me the trumpet is a masculine instrument and I was playing too delicately.
This guy was a studio musician in NY
Later in life, I studied from a symphony guy. He told me to never grip the trumpet.
I think a tight grip is a sign of a more tight approach to playing. A loose grip is a sign of a more relaxed approach.
