I saw a mouthpiece once that the lip was filed or ground down. I guess it was to make the bowl more shallow.

No, they didn't. It was never a "popular" horn with pros. For many, it is very awkward to hold. I had one and would never consider owning another one except to make a lamp out of it.

That's what happened ..... The balanced forward valve block caused them to smash themselves in the face with the Recording. That would turn anybody off.
Rafael Mendez and Louis Prima, at least, survived their initial meeting with a Recording. Besides, we all know it's not the horn.

TJ, here is a very interesting article on Uan Rasey's heavily modded Recording. Uan Rasey's Olds Recording Trumpet
He certainly sounded great on his and here is a giant among players who did play lead on a huge mouthpiece, very similar to the giant Bach 1A.
