I am finding that with my cornet, I seem to get a metalic ring out of my straight mute(vacchiano) and my practice mute (wick).
Is that normal?

"Sounds" like something is loose. Is it only on certain notes or throughout the range? I had a 2nd slide that had gotten loose and on certain notes it would ring/buzz. Hetman's #9 fixed it.
The mute modifies the sound by placing a resonant structure in front of the bell. What you hear may only be a problem for you. The further away from the horn, the greater the difference in what we perceive. Record the sound from the audience perspective (like from 30 feet or so). What you hear is probably not issue.
