Mouthoiece Placement

I have mentioned Digby Fairweather before on here.

See his mouthpiece placement:

I always tell people not to worry about placement of the mouthpiece and show them those photos but it seems teachers have been doing the same thing:

Re: Mouthoiece Placement

Since I have to place my mouthpiece more than a little bit off center, due to a protruding left incisor, I have some difficulty finding any humor in the above.

Digby Fairweather. I'll have to remember that.
I played with that mouthpiece placement through high school.
It worked fine for that level of playing.

He was probably talking about the cartoon, which was right on for kids: ever watch Little Leaguers play? They've got the fanny-brushing, glove-unstrapping and -restrapping-before-every- pitch of their favorite player down pat. Then they swing wildly at every pitch or bunt directly to the pitcher (who has a good chance of dropping the ball...). They copy what they're able to copy and pick up the skills eventually.

Re: Mouthoiece Placement

I think kids have started using the "Digby Fairweather" clause with their teachers.

I play a bit off centre because of my teeth.

In the UK Digby is probably one of the best known jazz musicians.

That dent in his cornet was made deliberately.
He banged it against the gate post of Louis Armstrong's house in Queens.
