AP music theory is worth it, but don't take the test. Most major schools do not accept it for credit.

    Re: Music theory cirriculum?

    Hi Xeno,
Don't feel bad. Most kids have little or no formal theory when they get to college. However, I think it's very wise to get a head start. Your Freshmen years will be difficult and about a third of your entering class will burn off and not graduate.
The one text that I would recommend(for any discipline) is a dictionary/reference book. Unfortunatley, one of the best books for music is no longer in print. Fortunatley, you can occasionally find it on Ebay. It is an old book but don't be fooled, this is a very good book and your future teachers are probably familiar with it. It's called:
    Music Lover's Encyclopedia
    Compiled by Rupert Hughs
    Edited By
    Deems Taylor and Russell Kerr

Doubleday, Doran and Company, Inc. New York
The more modern reference books are often watered down by using a large font or by displaying photo/pictures. My copy was written in 1939 and here is what it contains:
    Dictionary of Terms
Key to the Pronunciations of 16 Languages
Explaination of the Construction of Music for the Uninitiated
Biographical Dictionary Critical Essays by Distinguished Authorities
Great news!! There's one for sale on Ebay item# 201054649743 for around $6.00.
    Hope this helps.
