...with gunther schuller as director. a record i have (purchased in 1973) lists charles lewis as trumpeter. it sounds like a cornet & i saw the group on tv once using cornet rather than trumpet.
do you have any info you can share on charles lewis & what instrument he used on the recording?

Dear David,

Charlie Lewis was the original second trumpeter in the Empire Brass Quintet with Rolf playing first. I knew about him in the middle '70s. All I knew was that, though, and that he was a good, respected player. I was in school at the time and not much of a chamber concert-goer, unfortunately.

He still lives out here (Boston). If you look in the 9-535 book you can get his number to talk to him.

Charley was a student at Peabody in the sixties. Harold Rerhig was his teacher. Charley can be heard on the Bernstein Mass. Charley played trumpet, a Bach Bb, on the Joplin recording.
