Hey, wow I haven't been here in a long time.......I posted this along with another clip on trumpetherald, so I thought I'd put it here too.

Well - A few quick suggestions

Get a few really good recordings of this solo and compare your playing to theirs. What are the differences ?

Keep this procedure going all the time

1. Perform the solo and record while performing
2. Listen to your recording
3. Listen to one of the masters recording of the same solo
4. Compare your recording to theirs - what are the differences ??
5. Make corrections
6. Back to step 1. and repeat

I would suggest the following three recordings to start

1. Cornet Favorites - Gerard Schwarz on Sony Classical
2. The Arban Collection - Russell Gray
3. A Night at the Opera - Hakan Hardenberger - this is a DVD

Some areas to start with

1. Tempo - you are waaaaaaaay too slow especially toward the end of the finale.

2. You will want to double tongue from the measure marked (Double tonguing ad lib) until the last two lines. It will be a lot cleaner especially after you pick up the tempo.

3. Articulation needs to be lighter - not so much tongue or percussivness. This will be really important as the tempo increases. It should float like a leaf on the top of the stream.

4. Eveness of tempo - use a metronome while practicing. You also stopped a few times. Need to eliminate those stops.

5. Some missed notes in the last two lines - need to clean those up.

6. Last but not least - this is a "CORNET" solo. Listen to lots of good CORNET soloists and try to get a good handle on their sound and style. Very, very different from a trumpet. See if you can find a cornet to try out.

You are on the right road - keep up the good work. Now back into the practice room

The "Flattergrub" or literally, the "uncouth flutter" was the very descriptive term that the Germans had for the pedal tone. Apparently some players could produce a "Flattergrub" and nothing more.
