Patrick Sheridan.....WOW

I attended a leadership clinic today led by the great tubist Patrick Sheridan, sorry if this is a little off the trumpet topic but i have just never been so amazed by tuba, even though it was not a playing clinic he did a substantial amount of playing for us and it was AMAZING, his finale was Flight of the Bumblebee, ON TUBA, i didnt know that was possible, he had us time it and it was played in 43 seconds, it was insane. Has anyone else heard him play?

Haha! So you too have witnessed the greatness that is Patrick Sheridan ?!?

Well, our program flew Sam Pilafian (of Empire Brass fame) as well as Mr. Sheridan to our school for three days of The Breathing Gym, and also to be a guest soloist at our Spring Concert (a Dixieland theme). Needless to say it was amazing. Just hearing him warm-up is a thrill and they both work so well together. Our concert pieces that featured the two were:

- Black and Tan Fantasy
- The Hot Canary
- Flight of the Tuba Bee
- The Carioca
- Grandfather's Clock
- Nola

It was a very exciting three days and at the end of the concert I bought his CD "Storyteller" which I had him sign.

The coolest part of it though, is that when we saw their writing prowess (they arranged all of the songs they played), our Director hired them to write our field show for this upcoming season. We booted our old arranger because he liked to do things at his pace (read: "he liked to get paid for doing nothing"). So, they are coming back to our band camp to work with us, as well as do more Breathing Gym. I'm looking forward to it very much (starts this Thursday)!

Glad you had a great experience seeing a master at work!

Hey, this is a trumpet forum. No fair talking about tuba players who play circles around us!

Pat is really amazing (as is Sam of course). I got lucky enough to play a gig with him last holiday season. There is nothing like nailing a high C at the end of a tune and hearing the tuba player scream to the E above you... the jackass.

Hearing him play makes me glad he doesn't play trumpet. If any of you get a chance to hear him, you should really go out of your way to do so.

I made a mistake earlier this year.
I teach all brass, at beginner level (I try to push the advanced players onto specialist teachers) and am always at a problem when teaching tuba - I just can't get my chops to work properly on them, meaning I tend not to demonstrate anything, on tuba, for my tuba students. My mistake was to lend one of my young tuba stars a couple of CDs by Pat and Sam - they came back the next week wanting to play Czardas and all the jazz solos from Travellin' Light.
The problem - they only started playing tuba last September

The scary part - he's developing at the speed which means he might just do it

Keep your eyes out for the future of tuba playing in the UK - there is a 10 year old monster on the loose

So, are you a teacher at a public/private school? Or is it for a large studio? I know you freelance and I was wondering what you do and how you manage to fit it all in, what sort of schedule you have to keep, and all that.

Actually, we've got some fantastic tuba players here in the UK!

Anyone heard Steve Sykes?......formerly of Carlton Main Colliery and Grimethorpe bands and now a 'clinician' with Besson. He can play 'Czardas',..or 'Charred arse' as its called in brass band circles here, in about 7 octaves!!!

Steve is also a brilliant band trainer,...I took some of my students to one of his workshops and you should have seen their faces when he announced that the hymn we played would be played again but "backwards and up one and a half tones"!!!.....We did it too!

Pat is the conductor for the Brass Band I play with here in Phoenix, The Salt River Brass.

We have the pleasure of having him and Sam perform with us often and it's a real treat !!

Pat has incredible energy while conducting and it's contegeous. He's actually a really funny guy too.

I guess I am just very lucky to be going to the high school that I am. Pat lives literaly less than 5 minuets away from my school and he stops by 2 or 3 times a month to give us some advice every now and then. Even with all the help he has given us the last few years I never actualy heard him play untill just about a month ago. He really is amazeing. Not just as a player, but as a person. He is one of the greatest guys I know, his musical skills are simply unmatched and his clinics are purely quality...

The more I'm getting into this whole "music thing", I'm suddenly starting to realize how lucky I've been to be comming up though some of the best music programs in the state, and getting this, almost weekly advice from Pat is just unbelievable.

He's a great guy...
