![]() | Phrasing I have difficulty playing 4 measures without a breath, would playing really long tones help? I know I am probably playing to loud but I need a way of increasing the amount of air I can use.

| Fortissimo User | Do some really good stretching exercises before practicing/playing. A series of looooong inhales followed by controlled exhales to get the rib cage working helps also. Don't eat a meal just before playing and make sure your belt isn't a "gut cutter". |

![]() | I am thin, and pretty strong, thanks to golf, I run a mile in 9 minutes, would excercising help to increase the amount of air my lungs can hold?

![]() | You could be wasting your air, not regulating your air flow at the aperture. Like a flute player with an opening that's too big and the air rushes out with no resistance. Imagine a more compact, centered sound for a while. Constant flow, but the notes float out the bell. No force, constant energy. Thread the needle with your air stream, just a more compact air stream.

Most players overbreathe. It is HOW the air is used that is most important. Does the phrase have natural points of repose? Sing the phrase. Now try playing it. Always approach a phrasing problem with a eye for a musical solution. Wilmer | |
