My first teacher, an old-time jazz musician (he was in his 60s when he was my instructor back around 1980), used to tell stories of how he was taught to play. His teacher would hang a horn from the ceiling and require him to play without touching it with his hands and without moving the horn - pretty much zero pressure involved.

By the time he was teaching me he had almost no teeth in his mouth, but still had all the range, control, tonging speed and technical ability (as well as an amazing playing style) of almost anyone I have ever come in contact with.

He never used this technique with his students, but he did stress the need to minimize pressure and build up the muscles in order to play effectively and efficiently.
