How do you define audience friendly?
Some works have a large element in it which is merely to show off the technical display (not necessarily referring to the new work being discussed in the above thread). Should they be composed? (I personally say, why not? I believe more people would be able to play it in later generations). However, I think I see the point of people who are against such works - it has a chance of turning out into some circus show where people wouldn't appreciate the musical value behind it. But again, I believe there has always been this type of reaction when all those cornet solos were being composed.
