It is always good to be able to look ahead in the music. That way you can focus on later rhythms and prepare. Memorize that first note(or 2 or 3 or 4 or 6 depending on the signature)
Reading from Hymnals, walk before running
Rowuk also suggests reading from hymnal - I've seen him mention this several times - for someone who has trouble reading, the addition of transposing would make it nigh on impossible. Are you suggesting just playing it as if it was written for a Bb instrument? That tackles one problem, but then again, if I'm going to learn something new to play, it would be good to learn it how I'd play it if/when I were to play it in church.

Yes just play it, not worrying about transposing yet. If you need to transpose it later, do it then. It would only take 5 minutes max.
