red ring of death?

Sometimes when i play there is a red ring from the mouthpiece on my lips. I hear this is bad and just wondering if any of you had advice how to avoid it and how bad will it affect me in the future?

Everyone gets it, don't worry about. Your lips should turn red if you play, only if you see like a huge white mark when you take the mouthpiece off is when you should worry, because then you know you're damaging your muscles. Don't worry about the ring just don't swipe the MC in your lips so much.

Hi Allx!

The presure ring may be redder on some folk than on others, just based on skin color. Blondes with blue eyes will tend to have a more pronounced ring than brown-eyed folks with a good tan.

Rather than be concerned about the big ring, check out the bite of the mouthpiece, the place it is closest to the lips. If it looks like you've taken a cookie-cutter to your lips, you might want to be concerned. And you might want to find ways to reduce pressure while getting the same results.

The ring may look weird, but it isn't as bad as the ersatz hickey violin players get.

of late I've tried to maintain a "moist" embrochure. That is, I put lip balm on before I play. This seems to minimize any redness of my lips, which makes me think a dry embrochure would be harder on the lips.

My only question would be: how's the pressure on your lips when you play? Pressing too hard could give you excess redness.

I have a problem with the lip balm trick - I find that these sometimes have menthol content that reduces sensitivity by providing an anesthetic effect - how does it work for you?

I tried Campo-Phenic and managed to rip a bit out my lip at a concert using a Schile 14A4a. It hurt.

The best hydration for our lips is from the inside out.
