rf?

I was playing through Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance (No 4) yesterday in preparation for a concert tomorrow, when I noticed an "rf" at the start of a phrase (the f written as in forte).

I've seen sf and sfz before, but never an rf. I showed it to my teacher and he hadn't seen it before either.

Does anyone know what it means? Or is it just a typo?

I have limited knowledge of Italian, but could it stand for "rinforzando?" (sp). I believe this means that a note or a group of notes would be reinforced, ie accented, although not with as much emphasis as an accent...

I'm probably wrong!

Chris.

Re: rf?

Chris is correct about it meaning rinforzando, which, according to Bakers manual of musical terms is defined thusly; "With special emphasis;indicates a sudden increase in loudness, either a tone or chord, or throughout a phrase or a short passage".

Re: rf?

Cheers, that's handy to know although I'm assuming it's quite a rare term as I've never seen it before in 10 years of playing!

Re: rf?

RF is short for Radio Frequency - I think a triple C would qualify

So, do metal fillings in your teeth help you hit a Double C? Oops, wrong thread!
