That is a serious loss. He was part of that first generation of "modern" classic trumpet players with a very flashy style - and the playing qualities to still keep it serious!

Sad that this is another loss in the corporeal world but another addition to Gabriel's trumpet choir.

This is very sad news. I first came across Mr Smedvig on one of my very first two CDs, playing with Empire Brass, and was blown away by his brilliance and virtuosity.

    Vale Rolf Smedvig!

    Re: Rolf Smedvig has died.

The Empire Brass came to my alma mater, Point Loma Nazarene University in 1978, when I was a junior in college. On that evening, San Diego was fogged in and Rolf's plane was stuck circling Lindbergh field for about 45 minutes or more. The dean of the music department asked me if I could call my teacher, Charles Lauer, to see if he could fill in to get the concert going. Mr. Lauer came and sat in with them and played the first several numbers on the concert until Rolf arrived. And did himself, Rolf, Empire and dear old PLNC proud. Not to mention myself, of course! This is a real shock. Comforts to his family and close friends.

My condolences to his family and friends. I loved his playing with the Empire Brass, and he recorded one of the best performances of the Haydn Concerto I've ever heard.
