    Sticky valves

I have a 30 year old King trumpet in great condition. The #2 valve sticks sometimes. The valve is clean and oiled. There is no visible damage. Any info on why this happens would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Sticky valves

A sticky valve can be mechanical damage, a weak spring, excessive wear or the player pushing it down at a bad angle.

Mechanical damage can be easily spotted by cleaning and drying the valve and casing, painting the valve with magic marker and inserting it in the casing and pushing up and down a couple of times. If there are scatches or wear, you have found the problem. Acetone takes the magic marker back off.

Interchanging the spring in the second and third valve will show if that is the problem. The third valve is used least so should still have most of its tempre. Excessive wear can be checked by trying to move the valve axially by moving the stem. If there is excessive play, a valve job could be in order.
Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again.
