cornetguy is on a distinguished road
I have heard her live in Chicago and wanted to when I was in St. Louis for my brother's wedding, but couldnt get to it with all the wedding crap. I really like her playing. Very nice sound and very musical. I really like her ability to change sound per the music and what is going on in the orchestra, that no the trumpet isnt always the star, it is sometimes secondary and when it is, to be secondary and not overwhelm the orchestra.

I thinkshe is under a lot of people's radar screen because the St. Louis havent recorded a lot lately and no longer have national radio broadcast and I dont know whether they have done a lot of touring they havent come here. (not happy about that, touring orchestras dont come here but that is a different topic)

She is not as recognized as she should be for that very special, rare trait amongst trumpeters in general. She is a truly sensitive, beautiful, musician, soul, and trumpeter. I also don't know of anyone who has worked so incredibly hard to keep it going all of these years at the level that she has. She won that job in '72 I believe. She was not given the gig right way either. She had to split the job with her competitor for an entire season before the decision was made to give her the job. That was unheard of then and wouldn't fly too well now. Talking about having to prove herself?! She auditioned for an entire season alternating with her competition. Nervewrecking at the very least.

I have met Susan on several occasions and heard her play on as many. She plays an incredible piccolo trumpet as well. She is a rare combination of strong and humble - a fine leader and a flexible one. I find her to be a beautiful, sweet person aside from her playing. It is actually fitting that she has not been blaring on the radar. She is a rare jewel in the orchestral trumpet world that cannot be compared to others. She stands in a class of her own.
If you like Mahler 2, pick up St. Louis with Kathleen battle and Susan. Excellent stuff.
