Don't take my advice as gospel but breath is breath. If you can pull a quick one through the nose before advancing to the next measure so be it...if you can take it up the mouth so be it...The important thing about breathing is simply to breath for the sake of preserving the timing of the score.
Breathing is not cheating...but breathing to the point of syncoptating the score is degrading the music. I wish I could play 16 measures in one breath...
Good advice I found from Greg Wing.
"Remember that trumpet playing is 90% mental! What you think about most is what is going to happen to your trumpet playing!
1. Take a full, natural breath. Blow into your hand….. feel the air FLOWING!!!! It is not pushed or squeezed……………. We know that blowing activates some muscular activity. This is normal. Blowing to your body’s natural LEAN ON THE BREATH will dictate the speed of the air.2. Take a full, natural breath and blow through the pipe…….other than being aware of blowing through the natural resistance of the horn, the breath should be FLOWING THRU energizing the sound!
Each long tone is like blowing the pipe. One note at a time….. NOW!!! What are you thinking when you play Long Tones! YOU THINK OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SOUND (MAURICE ANDRE, DOC SEVERINSEN, ETC.)… AND YOU BLOW THRU THIS SOUND WITHOUT CONSCIENCE THOUGHT OF HOW TO BLOW!!!!!! (Your mind must stay on the goal.. beautiful sound……….not HOW to get it).TIDBIT: I remember learning how to blow this way………….geezzzzzzzzz…….it took me 6 -8 months to NOT get light headed………….Think of the beautiful sound………take a full, natural breath and blow a steady sound by thinking of a steady sound.
Over time, your breath will become stronger…………… when the breath becomes stronger, the air moves faster with less effort! On Clarke #1…… is your SOUND COLLAPSING by thinking of fingers; in other words; Does Your Sound Change When You begin to Move Your Fingers??????????? IT SHOULDN’T!!!!!!! THE KEY IS TAKING IT SLOW! Okee Dokee!!!! This is enough to think about for now!!!
Play YOUR balance! Do NOT blow past the LEAN ON YOUR BREATH! LET’S FIRE IT UP!!!!!!!!!"
Have a great evening.
Hope this explanation helps in understanding how to take this medication. Do let me know how it is working in another 4 weeks.
