Taps for Non-Military

Recently I attended the funeral of a friend's family.

The person was NOT a veteran but dearly loved his country, was a patriot in every sense of the word.

Before we left the funeral home to go to the cemetary, a family member asked if I would play Taps at the gravesite.

I always have a horn with me, and I was not about to turn down a member of the family at a time like this. I played Taps.

Do any of you have thoughts on this circumstance, pro or con? Taps for non veterans?

Castle Bravo? Gicos?

Re: Taps for Non-Military

I'm not so sure playing a military call is proper for a non-military funeral, but it would be hard to turn down an on the spot request like that. Anyone on the site know the official answer for this question? I looked on Jari's site ( TapsBugler - History of Taps, bugles, bugler, Taps performance guidelines, by Jari Villanueva ) and he doesn't discuss the matter.

Re: Taps for Non-Military

My Dad was a WWII veteran. When I was a high school kid he used to wait with me while I played taps at all of the ceremonies in our town. He always said that he wanted me to play it for him when he died. Something no 16 year old wants to talk about! But 20 years later I played at his funeral. I can't listen to it today without thinking about him. I would certainly do it if asked by the family. You did the right thing Chuck.

Re: Taps for Non-Military

I would have played it. They are your friends.

I thought about this most of today. If the situation arises again why don't we play the first few bars of "Fanfare for the Common Man?" Copeland wrote it for the unsung workers of WWII including women and taxpayers.

If the family wants taps anyway no harm done.
