When I started playing, I was mentored informally by a High School girl who ended up taking me to see her private teacher. I was hooked! Not only was she a great player and an excellent female role model for a shy, geeky kid like me, but she got me started in private lessons with one of the best musicians I have ever known. She went on to be an orchestral player, but now has tired of the business and become a firefighter - quite a loss. My point is that she inspired me without ever trying to give me a lesson - she just pointed me in the right direction, and encouraged me. I have done the same for others, and could never regret a moment of it, even if it made me no money. Mentor a kid - enjoy it and learn together! And my eternal thanks to Kim Stewart, wherever she is! :)
