So let's see, 310,000,000 people (give or take a couple in Iowa) and 50,000,0000 school age children - so that's roughly about 1 in 6 of the population are schools aged kids - oh, really? As an educator I estimate you have underestimated by about 50%.

Kingtrumpet, you are missing the point. Parents who are homeschooling their children are teaching academic skills and knowledge. this is about learning, retaining information and thinking skills.

When we teach someone how to play a musical instrument we are teaching motor skills. Completely different skill set. If you want your child to play say baseball. You can play catch and bat some balls in the backyard. But when you want him to learn to really play, you get them on a team and the coachs (experts) teach them the finer points of playing. Right!

Besides learning to play a musical instrument is more complex than academic studies and sports. I can't begin to tell you how many people I've had come up to me and say" I played for a little bit but quit because I wasn't any good". It really bothers me because I know the problem wasn't with them but because they had no or poor instruction.

Especially with the trumpet. There are some instruments then one can learn to play abeit at a low level by themselves. But the trumpet is not one of them. becasue of the relative small mpc compared to the lower brass and the high resistance of the horn, it's just way too easy to get into bad habits. And the students may not realize they have a problem untill they have benn playing for a couple of years. After 34 years of teaching private lessons, I've seen these problems. I know how frustarting it can be for a student. Is this what you wish on these students?
