"If you don't practice, I will eat your soul!!!!!!"(my private lesson teacher totally stole eat your soul from me)
No cute phrases that I recall, but my teacher was the stereotypical "jazz man" with the hip cat lingo, flat cap and gravelly voice.
Sometimes while playing a lesson, the way I'd play would remind him of someone and he'd start laughing out load and yell out something like "YEAH Man, you laid that down like < insert obscure, possibly made up jazz legend name here> !!!"
It was really a treat to have him see that you were thinking about how to phrase something and note just playing rythyms and pressing buttons. Playing music not notes.
Very cool guy. Dick Brown is his name plays in and around Cincinnati.
From Mr. Taylor, my influence and my mentor, my band director:
"CHECK THE KEY SIGNATURE YOU MORONS!"
Carter Eggers, long time professor of trumpet at Eastern Michigan University, and specialist on early trumpets.
"Theory and Preparation meet on the battlefield of application"
One I jsut remembered from my first year in community band. The director (who has since gone on to other things) was trying to get the trumepts to bring out our part in a march.
Raising voice..."Come on Trumpets....play like MEN!"
Embarrassed voice"..uh...except for Cindy."
"Don't empty your spit valves during the rests!"
