Top 5 Lists, or Library Building

OK, here's a way to spark some discussion:

What are your top 5 trumpet-related albums / videos in each of these categories:

* Classical
* Modern 'Classical'
* Jazz
* Blues
* Pop
* Other

You don't have to fill out each category, just fill out what you know. :)

Misty,
5 is not enough but I understand that hundreds of CDs at once is serious money! I am not sure if my list is even still buyable.

Here is my list of favourite "must recommends":

* Classical
Sergei Nakariakov "Echoes from the Past"
Stockholm Chamber Brass "Sounds of St. Petersburg"
Chicago Symphony Orchestra "Bartok Concerto for Orchestra"
Niklas Eklund "Virtuoso Trumpet Concertos volume 2"
Philadelphia Orchestra/Ormandy "Pictures at an Exhibition"

* Modern 'Classical'
Wynton Marsalis "Tomasi, Jolivet: Trumpet Concertos"
Stockholm Chamber Brass: "Heavy Metal"
Gabrielle Cassone "Berio Sequenza X"
Ed Carroll "A. Schnittke: LIFE WITH AN IDIOT "

* Jazz
Maynard Ferguson "The Essential Maynard Ferguson"
Harry James "Stompin at the Savoy"
Tower of Power - doesn't matter - all their stuff is GREAT
Earth, Wind and Fire "Earth, Wind and Fire"
Miles Davis "Bitches Brew"

* Blues
I really do not own any blues trumpet recordings. I like Muddy Waters though!

* Pop
Chicago
Blood, Sweat and Tears "Blood, Sweat and Tears"
Chuck Mangione "Children of Sanchez"
Beatles "Penny Lane"
Maynard Ferguson "Rocky"

* Other
Timofei Dokschizer "Max Bruch Kol Nidrei - Jewish Melodies"
Wynton Marsalis "Carnaval"
Anything by "the real group"
Anything by "The Manhattan Transfer"
Frank Sinatra "My Way"

Re: Top 5 Lists, or Library Building

Thanks! I knew 5 would not be enough but I thought it would help people to distill the 'must-haves' from the 'like-to-haves'.

And speaking of Penny Lane, have you heard the Canadian Brass All You Need Is Love? I finally picked it up from iTunes at Christmas (with a stocking-stuffer gift certificate) and I think I've listened to it no less than 20 times through. It's fabulous, especially the first half.

Canadian Brass has awesome players but I do not care for that type of playing regardless of the piece. Listening to them does not give me any insite into the music, just their virtuosity. It is just me and my attitude. Sorry.
