The Trumpet & Your Braces

I know a lot of trumpet players have had to deal with braces sometime in their life at some point and they've just had figure it out one way or another. That's what Im trying to do... figure it out!! Im trying to get used to playing with the braces and hopefully I will build up a calus on the inside of my mouth from my braces and it will get easier. I was just wonder if anyone else could share their expericences or had any other ideas on what to do Thanks!!

Re: The Trumpet & Your Braces

My students use dental wax over the braces to keep from damaging the lips from the inside.
I just don't push range much during the brace period. Some have no trouble at all, some take the opportunity and work on tonguing and technique!
Everybody has made it through and because musical development can continue at many levels, you still have something to work for!

Re: The Trumpet & Your Braces

Hey Jack!
This is your friend from W'ville!
Mike and I were talking about you last night. Don't despair my friend and don't try to force anything at this time. Take it real slow for the time being. 5-10 minutes max of long tones, and lip slurs, don't try to go any higher than 3rd space C. Try a minute or two of "no-pressure" long tones. I will be happy to explain this to you in person or Mike will help ya out in the explanantion.
Do not worry about range, endurance, flexibilty presently, it will eventually come back to you. The biggest challenge is trying to let go of what you could do prior to the braces and what it sounds like now without throwing the Horn thru the wall! As the old adage says:"One day at a time". You will get back to the place you are accustomed to being at. As far as wax, some kids do well with it, while others do better w/o. That will be your decision on what works BEST for you.
You will be JUST FINE !

Right on! You'll find that our bodies are excellent at adapting--just set (and keep adding) realistic goals, sit back and enjoy. You might want to stay away from spinach for a while, however.

Dig around on this website and you'll find a lot of suggestions. You have already received the best. If you really want a book on playing with braces try this:
