    Tuning an older Cornet

    Can anyone advise i have just bought a 30 year old Getzen Capri cornet in very good codition however most notes are playing sharp. i am using a Bach 1and1/2C mouthpiece and the tuner set at 440

    The problem is most likely not the horn or mouthpiece. They are metal and practically NEVER too short if the tuning slide still moves.

    Sounds like you are lipping up a lot! Try practicing after taking a long bath (20 minutes). We are very relaxed after that and it may give you an indication of what is necessary.

    I tried a Getzen trumpet and found that the intonation was very different than I was used to, so all of the notes were "in the wrong spot". After you relax some you might need to just play it a while until you learn your cornet's intonation pattern.

    So, is it sharp even when you pull the tuning slide way out?

    And take the trumpet in with you. You can clean it, blow bubbles with it, and maybe get some practice in along the way.

    30 years old isn't really old for a cornet. It is absolutely a modern design with modern tuning. My "newest" horn is over 40 years old. Try tuning to a tone rather than an electronic tuner--it helps in so many ways.
