    Unwanted Pivot

    Hi there,

I seem to have developed a pivot that i dont want when playing into the upper register, it happens around E above high C, and although, when it happens, i can really belt out some top notes, my sound completely changes, and it feels like my throat is closing over and squeezing the notes out rather than playing them. Is there anything i can do to stop this, or should i just let it develop naturally?! HELP ME!!!!

    Re: Unwanted Pivot

oh. For pivot issues you can check out the Doc Reinhardt forum at TH. Otherwise:
Have you checked things out in a mirror, or with a visualizer?
Are you approaching the high notes by intervals, and if so, which ones?
Is it worse when you are tired?
What is your body position? Spine straight, head up and all that?

For this sort of thing a teacher can be of paramount importance. Good luck!

    Re: Unwanted Pivot

there will always be a "frontier" - something new and unexplored in your playing. If that is above high C now, don't worry. Try to stay relaxed when you play and through lip slurs and long tones, (pedal tones.........), you will stretch your present technique ever higher. If you have decent routine, g above high C could be your pivot in a year.
