    visualization exercises?

As youngsters we were given flash cards to help learn many skills. As it applies to Jazz improvisation, is it helpful to use similar tools to learn chords, scales, patterns, etc.? Or, does trying to visualize these things during an improv. a hinderence?

What a cool idea, Crow, you should have copyrighted the idea before posting it here.

I am going to make some and incorporate them into the lessons that I give. Circle of fifths, cadences, major, minor scales, modes, chords. That would all work. The kids pick a card with for instance Ab7 and don't tell me what the notes are - they PLAY them.

Advanced students could make card that say "Clarke #32" or promenade Pictures at an exhibition or My funny Valentine, that they then play from memory.

My husband uses flash cards when teaching beginning guitar students for identifying string names and notes, and I have used them myself to prepare for auditions - mainly for scales -shuffle the cards and play whichever scales come up. You could easily set up flash cards for whatever you want to study at the moment. They work great for studying music theory whenever you're in an environment where you can't play.

    You bet.
Its how I learned (and continue to learn) and it is part of how I teach.
The great thing about the approach is that it can be used while doing other things, watching TV, etc.
As for jazz, I'd recommend memorizing the Cycle of 4ths. The amount of info that will branch from memorizing this handy device is sizable.
I'll even help get you started. The word BEAD shows up twice in the Cycle of 4ths.
    Good Luck
