| Pianissimo User | The whole diaphragm issue is simple. Yes, it is a part of breathing (playing) and it does its job (contracting and relaxing) all day on an involuntary basis. This means that we can't control that muscle, just like we can't control our stomach or intestines. Some people argue that you actively "use" or control your diaphragm when playing. That is not true. | Forte User | That's all good information, and very important to KNOW. But don't overanalyze what you do with those muscles. Try not to think about it at all, but instead try to think the big picture: what you need to sound like. The brain will divde that into the small bits of (apply x amount of pressure; tense up this much; relax this much). |
