What do we use

What muscles do we use when we play the trumpet? Since the lips are just fat... what muscles do we have to develop?

Facial muscles around the lips for sure, tongue muscle, fast fingers, some would argue diaphragm but there are some who don't believe this is really used for playing.

The whole diaphragm issue is simple. Yes, it is a part of breathing (playing) and it does its job (contracting and relaxing) all day on an involuntary basis. This means that we can't control that muscle, just like we can't control our stomach or intestines. Some people argue that you actively "use" or control your diaphragm when playing. That is not true. What you can "use" or control are the abdominal and intercostal muscles (and maybe the biceps ), to name a few groups.

That's all good information, and very important to KNOW.

But don't overanalyze what you do with those muscles. Try not to think about it at all, but instead try to think the big picture: what you need to sound like. The brain will divde that into the small bits of (apply x amount of pressure; tense up this much; relax this much).

Exactly. Play the horn. Let the rest take care of itself.
