what's a trumpet supposed to sound like?

    dbacon,
You brought back found memories for me when you mentioned Danny Stiles in one of your lists! After Watrous left for the west coast Danny would put together a big band once a month, or so, to play various gigs in Rockland County, NY, which is where he was living at the time. Since he always fronted the band he would call me to play the lead book. I can't tell you how much I learned from Danny...not only through conversations, but by simply listening to him when he played! I would usually show up to the gig with either a different piece or horn...or both...and he would "bust my chops" about it all night!! He NEVER switched his equipment! He played a lacquered lightweight 72 bell Bach and a Giardinelli 7M piece...that's it!!! He could play ANYTHING on that combination...from the prettiest ballad to over-the top lead with screaming double C's. I really miss him!

Danny Stiles is one of the greatest players ever, and completely without recognition! His prime NY days, recording with everyone from Thad and Mel to Manny Album then to some fame with Bill's Manhattan Wildlife Refuge. Remember Danny's cadenza on Dichotomy? Cats were working that out for years. "Ayo" written by Wayne Andre (I think). Watrous and Danny were sidekicks on so many sessions in those days. Totally underated player!

    How about: Harry Glantz
    Raphael Mendez
    Harry James
    Maurice Murphy
    Roger Voisin
    Louis Armstrong
    Gil Johnson
    Bernie Adelstein
    Frank Kaderabek
    Rod Franks
    Herb Alpert

Boy, the list could go on and on. That's what makes it fun, right? These guys played a mix of horns, too. Benges, Olds, Selmers, Bachs, and who knows what else.

when i was a boy i had to play a Bach Strad and a 1C which i hated at the time as it didn't sound "cool".
now I'm finding that Bach sound "is what a trumpet sounds like"
and I'm not liking the "dirty" tones so much anymore.
    i must be getting olde 8) .

    Well,

Of all trumpets I've ever played, I enjoy the sound of the Wild Thing best . . . big, fat, dark and rich (unless I want to make it compact and bright with the #2 slide . . . or "split the difference" with the #3 or #4 slides).

Of course . . . y'all would not expect me to say anything else . . . and I was sayin' it long before representing the line!

    Merry Christmas all,

    Tom
