Last week my little boys were all down in Tucson for vacation bible school so I had some time in the evenings to do some extra practicing and run some errands. I stopped by a music store and was flipping through the trumpet music and found a Star Wars: Episode II book with CD accompaniment. I’ve never purchased one of these books with recorded accompaniment before, but it had some great color pictures in the front and I figured they would get a kick out of hearing me play some of these.
I pulled the book out this afternoon and they were really excited about the pictures and couldn’t believe it when I got to the pages with the printed music. I told them they would really enjoy the first piece (“The Imperial March – Darth Vader’s Theme”) and they did. Then I got to the second one, “Duel of the Fates”. We know this as the Darth Maul music from Episode I.
I wasn’t ready for what happened next!
They all said, “Dad! Turn it off for a minute!” They ran off to another part of the house and found their light sabers (a project they had done down in Tucson with several sheets of colorful construction paper) and all returned with their “double light sabers”. They also came in with their hooded bath robes and slowly took off their “jedi cloaks” during the first four bars, getting ready to do battle. These are white robes with colorful racecars, baseballs, bats, etc. Little minds work very well with what is at hand!
When the Allegro started in the 5th bar, there was a frenzy of light saber action swirling around me. If you’ve ever seen Yoda and Dooku go at it in Episode II you know what I’m talking about. I’ve never seen them so animated in my entire life! I felt like I was merely there for the ride, and my little boys had the time of their lives, like they were actually in the movie.
What a great way to spend 10 bucks! It made my day!
