where to look for vintage cornets

Does any one know any music shops (preferably in Europe) specialising in selling of vintage cornets?

As a long time cornet collector, I have had it repeatedly shown to me that the objects of my affection are where you happen upon them. An example of this is the cornet that I just bought yesterday. It is one of the most rare, and perhaps the Holy Grail of collectable cornets. Most other cornet collectors have heard of and have seen photos of the York Airflow cornet, but, have never seen one, nor, had the opportunity to handle or purchase one. Because I have a friend who is also into collecting vintage brasswinds who lives near the dealer who had this old horn for sale on consignment, my friend sent me a message pertaining to it's sale. I was on vacation, camping at a state park on the west coast of Michigan, I found it difficult to contact the dealer. A week after my friend notified me about this old horn, I finally telephoned the dealer to arrange a viewing. The old horn needs a $400.00 leadpipe change, plus the cost for silver plating the pipe. It will then be nearly pristine, with the factory original mouthpiece, cleaning rod, lyre, and very decent condition case. I shudder at the value of this horn, but, I bought it for a VERY depressed price. They are where ever you happen to find them.

Thanks, Wilmer. I was about to post that, but my wife found something 'else' for me to do.

I know that you have been aware of the Airflow, but, have you ever played one? My old friend, mentor and employer, A.J. 'Bill' Johnson, prior to selling out to Carl Fischer designed this horn. It was his favorite out of all of the many brasswinds that he designed while at York as an employee and as it's principal stockholder and plant superintendant. The name of the model tells it's story. It is the most freeblowing medium bore cornet that I have ever played. By the way, this is the second one of these that I have owned. I took my pay as a cornet/trumpet teacher back room repair tech for two weeks,( part time ),to pay for the first one. My ex wife sold it while I was out of town, after finding out that it had a high value. I wanted to throttle her.

Well Lou, we see how it looks (goreous) and you told us how it blows, the only thing left is, how does it sound? I suspect that it's got an American jazz cornet kind of thing going, but what do you think?

Back to the original question, wouldn't UK Ebay be a good source for cornets for a European? What other European nationalities are into cornet in a big way?

Here in the good ol USA I see lots of good choices on Ebay, plus there's the TH Marketplace (got my Lawler there) and a handful of US dealers with lots of vintage cornets (mostly long-bell design alas).

Dave, you say "long bell designs, alas". Why alas? The long bell cornets have every bit as much viability as many of the newer trumpet designs that have been made intentionally to sound like a cornet. "Dark,smokey, dulcet' etc. in their advertising and evaluations. I love my short cornets for the dark tone. I also am more than enamored of my medium bore trumpets that sing stridently, but, with purity of tone. A classic example is my King Liberty, .448 bore. I KNOW that I can be heard up in the 'nosebleed section' of almost any major auditorium if I simply lean on that old girl a 'wee' bit. Personally, I am not overly fond of dark toned, slippery slotted trumpets. I suppose that they have their place in the musical world and that I am dating myself as an old guy, but, I do know what I like and why I like it, not because someone else likes it, but, because it is a sound that I like.

When looking for a cornet that will fit in a "traditional" UK-style brass band, the long bells don't seem to fit. As a jazz alternative they're generally great, but someone looking for a short bell cornet will notice in the USA that the long bells are about 10 to 1 or higher in the Ebay listings, in keeping with the US production ratios, excepting Getzen.

The shorties are out there, just harder to find on US Ebay.
