| Piano User | Who is the trumpeter who was part of... the Peter Meremblum California Youth Symphony Orchestra in the 1930s that went on to become the Principal Trumpet of the New York Philharmonic. Does anyone know? Last edited by _TrumpeT_ : 11-30-2006 at 03:26 AM. |

| I can't answer your question, but I did look up the Peter Meremblum Youth Orchestra and it sounds like it was a great environment to develop young players. Based on what I know about the Principal trumpet players in the New York Philharmonic, I'm guessing that none of the players on this list would have been in Peter Meremblum's orchestra. Glantz was already in the NYP when Meremblum's Youth Orchestra began in 1936. Vacchiano was also in the NYP prior to 1936 and assumed the principal postion in 1942. I don't believe that any of the other players on the list grew up in California. Possibly the player that you are thinking about was a section player with the New York Philharmonic? New York Philharmonic Principal Trumpet Players Start-End________Name 1988-Current_______Phil Smith 1978-1988_________Phil Smith (Co-Principal) 1973-1988_________John Ware (Co-Principal) 1977-1978_________Louis Ranger (Acting Co-Principal) 1973-1977_________Gerard Schwarz (Co-Principal) 1942-1973_________William Vacchiano 1928-1942_________Harry Glantz I have the complete list of the players that have been in the New York Philharmonic (in my desk at work). I'll have a look at the names in the morning. Do you have any idea of the player's first or last name? Do you know when they would have been in the Meremblum orchestra? | Piano User | Thank you. I thought it was unlikely as well; may be the information I read was wrong. |

I can't imagine what it would feel like to have your name added to that list -- very much like being in a hall of fame!

| Here’s the list of all players that have officially been in the New York Philharmonic trumpet section (on any part) since 1928: 1944-48..........Boltuch, Morris 1990-93..........Coble, Goerge F. 1962-93..........Fornarotto, Carmine 1928-42..........Glantz, Harry 1929-35..........Klass, Solby 1928-30..........Konevsky, Leonard 1967-68..........Ligotti, Albert (ex) 2006-.............Muckey, Matthew 1977-06..........Penzarella, Vincent (or possibly 2005. I’m not sure when he retired) 1929-62..........Prager, Nathan 1976-78..........Ranger, Louis 2006-.............Ross, James 1928-36..........Schlossberg, Max 1973-77..........Schwarz, Gerard 1979-80..........Shnek, Zachary (sub) 1942-77..........Smith, James 1978-.............Smith, Philip 1998-.............Smith, Thomas V. 1993-03..........Sullivan, Robert 1935-73..........Vacchiano, William 1928-29..........Venezia, Frank 1948-88..........Ware, John R. 1993-95..........Wilt, James Find out who grew up in California, and you will probably have your match. I see that Norman Schweikert played in the Meremblum orchestra and he went on to the CSO on horn. Good luck! |

The legacy part probably comes to mind AFTER retiring. While you are in the spotlight, I imagine your focus is on keeping everybody in front of you happy. Manny, Wilmer, Ed and Tony can fill us in on their feelings!

| Piano User | Thank you for the replies. I was just reading a review of the movie "They Shall Have Music" and that's where I read the wrong information. |

| Re: Who is the trumpeter who was part of... Welcome Matt! You and Jim sounded great on Beethoven 5 last October! Good you have you here. P.S. Let’s see, Calif. Youth Symphony in the 1930s, makes you around 80-90. You look pretty good for your age! Last edited by Derek Reaban : 02-19-2007 at 03:49 PM. |
