Albinoni Concerto

Hey,

I just found out that I have the opportunity to play the Albinoni Concerto in 3 months with orchestra and know nothing of the piece. I have the recording done by Tine Thing Helseth, but that's all I have to go on.
I was wondering what key the piece is in and traditionaly what horn is used to play the piece? Any other general comments and tips about performing the piece would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

The Albinoni is an oboe concerto and is generally played by trumpet players with the picc. It is playable on a C trumpet for jocks without a picc.
Tips about performing this piece should start with research on your part about who he was and what he did for a living, what instruments he had at his disposal and the magnitude of his influence. This is all wiki-able or google-able. Once you have an overview, many things make sense without having to describe the work note by note. It would make sense to get a good oboe performance of this too.

Re: Albinoni Concerto

There is more than one Albinoni concerto. Which one is it? Concerto in Bb (oboe) Concerto St. Mark (oboe)? He did write a Sonata for trumpet (which works just fine with a string quartet sans continuo. Generally piccolo is used. Albinoni wrote "nice" music, typically Italian with some wonderful, playful melodies. Fun to play, but not mind-blowingly deep.

Re: Albinoni Concerto

A friend of mine recently played it on the Bb side of the picc. Makes sense, it puts it in F or C or something easy. The A side puts it in B major or something like that.

I actually played it on a Bb trumpet, regular trumpet, not Piccolo, when I was still in school.

Here is the part written down an octave from sounding pitch. If you play it on Bb take it up and octave but Bb piccolo can be played as written.
