| New Friend | Arutunian Concerto Does anybody have any suggested recordings/tips for this concerto? The only recording I've seen thus far is Sergei Nakriakov's on YouTube. Can anybody link me to another excellent one? I'm trying to get this ready in time to compete at the NTC. Just started though Also, I heard that some people don't really like this concerto for being cheesy or something like that, but I don't really get it, can somebody explain that a little better? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Arutunian Concerto Sr.Taco, Let me tell you a little story about a 16 year old kid named Hayato Tanaka who played the Arutunian Concerto for me at a masterclass at Chosen Vale last summer. It's generally known that I don't care for this piece, believing it at best to be Armenian Leroy Anderson. However, on this night (and later during a concert that also featured a guy named Hardenberger) Hayato's performance was scintillating. Every phrase reached the right mark at the right moment. His tempos were like the wind yet his articulation remained clean. His vibrato was gorgeous. His command over the trumpet left absolutely no possibility of scraping a note (!) The shape of the cadenza was perfect and, most importantly, he obviously knew and was living every note in the score. The audience, many accustomed to more adventuresome fare being presented in these classes, went absolutely crazy when he finished and my first (and only salient) comment to him was to say how he held my attention throughout, in spite of the baggage I was carrying concerning this piece, and forced me to listen with pleasure. The moral of this story? Make a total commitment to ANY piece that you choose to play and then perform the daylights out of it. If you do this you will be very successful at NTC. Good luck, EC |

The problem is in fact that without the Armenian "groove", it is simply stale. The Dokschizer recording makes me want to get up and dance! We will probably have to wait for the Tanaka CD though.

![]() | Re: Arutunian Concerto Sergei's recording is good Dokschizer's is the original classic one, I actually have a dvd of him playing it ( very poor quality), the key to this concerto is phrasing and clean articulation, good luck! |

| Mezzo Forte User | Re: Arutunian Concerto Lemme do some digging. I have the Dokshizer (or however it was spelled, I've seen a ton), and as said, it is fantastic. It's a shame you have to work to find any of his recordings these days.

| Forte User | Re: Arutunian Concerto Another very nice recording is Rod Franks' though it is arranged for trumpet and wind orchestra, instead of the original scoring for trumpet and symphony orchestra. Very nice playing, but I would expect no less from Rod.
