ASO Concert - Mahler 2 and meeting my first TMer

I attended the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Concert this evening and they performed Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony No. 2. Having performed this work before, I was really curious how much of the original scoring they would use. Well, they minimized the trumpets to six - having four run off stage for the calls (as most orchestras do). It worked......but once I would like hear an orchestra use the full orchestration of ten - just for giggles. They also had the timpani set up antiphonally. That was a surprise for the ears. Spano did some different little things that I hadn't heard before, but it was overall a very traditional performance. Mark Hughes played principal trumpet and the lyrical passages were beautiful. I would have to give the group prize to the horns though. They sounded excellent. This orchestra really does need a new hall. The current one reminds me of Lincoln Center as the acoustics are not the greatest. I find it takes away the "shimmer" of the orchestra's overall sound.

A side note - I met my first TMer tonight..... "dizforprez" AKA Jason. As I was walking out we both did a double take and recognized one another from our avatars. LOL. It was a pleasure to meet you Jason !! I hope it is sooner rather than later that we play through some duets. Good luck with all you have going on your "plate". You can handle it.

P.S. Remember to send me a copy of that picture.

Hey Dylan, were you there? If you were, I wish you would have tapped me on the shoulder and said hello. Darn. I know there were lots of brass players in the audience. I could just feel it in the air and see it in most cases. LOL. I talked to some friendly trombone players (shhhhhhhhhh, don't tell anyone), but Jason was the only trumpeter to approach me so we could say, "Hey!" and chat a bit. Most folks here don't have a picture of themselves posted, so I would have a hard time recognizing anyone. Infact, I walked right by Jason and as I turned to my husband and said, "I think that is Jason from TM".....there he was about to tap me on the shoulder. I was happy that we managed to catch one another. It feels good to actually meet someone in the flesh rather than type to them.

I forgot to mention one important component of last night's performance. Since we were all gathering in honor of "The Resurrection Symphony", this kind of makes sense. I believe most orchestras perform the Star Spangled Banner before concerts - at the least the ones with which I have seen and performed. Well, I have NEVER in my life experienced one like last night. I guess having a huge choir on stage helped, but it seemed as though everyone in the audience belted it out too. I know I did. Something just came over me. I am a mezzo for sure, but I used my trumpet air and managed to sing the soprano line from the bottom of my heart and lungs the entire way through. There were chillbumps galore in the hall. When everyone sat down afterwards, you could see folks talking to their buddies or spouses. We all felt it. WHAT we felt, I am not quite sure. I think it was some long-lost patriotism that most of us had not tapped into for a while. Needless to say, I was impressed and touched.

Of course I saw Mike - he was on stage. LOL. I will admit it though, I had no idea whether he was a member here or not. There are lots of folks here incognito I am sure.

Mike - we have not met yet, but we will someday I am sure. Great playing last night. I am sure you had a blast.

here you go!

Man what a concert! The ASO sounded great and Mark did a excellent job!. Every time I hear a concert I walk away never wanting to hear a cd again, it doesnt capture half of the sound. Alex next time you need to sit up top, I had no poblems hearing things up there.

Duets are a must next month! you cant back out on me like you did this time

Hello, all!

I'm moonlighting from the "other" trumpet related site. I forgot that I set up a profile and never used it... Anyway, good to see so many Georgians here!

Sorry I missed the concert this past weekend . I actually have a good excuse, though...was playing with the Macon Symphony, so at least it was for a gig!

Email or PM me if any of you would like to play sometime...I always love to meet new players!

Take care,

Paul Poovey

Glad to see you over here

I am always open for duets anytime I am in town. I am in Atlanta about once a month, so as soon as I know what dates that I will be back in town I will get back to you and Alex. Maybe we can work something out

I was at the Saturday night performance, as well! I agree that the horns pretty much stole the show for me, instrumentally, anyway. But I was really blown away by the chorus. I'd never seen them perform before and both the Star Spangled Banner and the finale of the symphony were "goosebumpy"...or something like that.
