| Audition Piece Hello everybody, I am an intermediate high school trumpet player who needs a good audition piece. It should be advanced enough to impress my instructor, but I don't have much time left, so it will have to be something I can learn quickly. Also, please no notes above a C above the staff. My tone can be somewhat erratic above that. Thanks, Chris Edit: Also, I just wanted to mention that I can use growls and flutter tounging fairly well. Also, I was wondering: I can circular breathe all right, but it sounds a little raspy. Would it be better to do it in my audition, or leave it out? | Re: Audition Piece All right, thank you. Also, I was wondering where I could get this piece quickly. Is it available for download online? There are not too many good music stores within an hour of my house, and I need it fairly quickly. Thanks, Chris Last edited by trumpetmaster : 12-01-2007 at 04:11 PM. Reason: Wow. That was stupid. |

Impress your instructor, but not invest much time. Do you think your instructor is deaf? This normally gets me off on a rant about paying your dues, but I am not even going to start. If you do not want to INSULT your instructor, forget all of the things that YOU think are flashy, pick a simple piece and knock him down with your musicality. You will be doing yourself a favor (showing good taste and common sense) and save the comment "you could have invested more time here and here and here".......... Damned Nintendo generation - download a cheat and become an ace trumpet player. Am I glad that this does not work!

I and my instructor were discussing that very topic in regards to my recital in February just the other night. |

I don't know how often that I have told this to players at competitions where I have been in the jury. The power of a well played melody is so underrated and feeble attempts at the spectacular so disappointing. I am amazed that more do not get the message! Stretching your personal envelope is welcome and desirable. Inadequate preparation is insulting and undesirable. There are sooo many beautiful, playable things out there. Chris, you could make my (and your instructors) day - let me know what you ended up playing!

| Mezzo Forte User | Re: Audition Piece Ok, fine, I'll rant then. I probably have not the total experience on auditioning that these other guys have. However, for as young as I am, I have been on a panel quite a few times. I would like to totally agree with Rowuk and the others. There are too many young folks trying to play techincal music with no musicality! I do NOT want to sit there for 10 minutes (or however long) and listen to someone trying to hack through mutiple tounguing, range, or extremely rapid sequenced licks to impress me. Instead, I would LOVE for someone to sit down, play something where they can show us what they know and how they interpret that knowledge. Getting through something hard because it's hard is a waste of everyone's time, including your own practice time! Yes, everyone wants to play Carnival or Brandenberg or whatever. Unless you have your own interpretation, do something else. If I want to hear Wynton's arrangement... I'll go listen to Wynton. I guess what I'm trying to say is that anyone can play Mary Had A Little Lamb, but not everyone can play it well (MUSICALLY)! Not to say you shouldn't challenge yourself. Just be smart about it. My two cents, keep the change. |
